Bringing Home a Pickerel Pup

IMG_8671.heic

We raise our puppies in our home with intention, health, and heart.
Here’s what the journey looks like from first hello to homecoming day.

STEP 1 — Apply

-Submit Your Puppy Application

Families begin by completing our puppy application so we can learn about your home, lifestyle, and hopes for your future pup.
This helps us thoughtfully match each puppy to the right family.

STEP 2 — Reservation

-Reservation & Waiting List

Approved families may place a reservation fee to join our waiting list for an upcoming litter.
Reservations are honored in the order they are received and are applied toward the final purchase price.

STEP 3 — Raising Your Puppy

-How Your Puppy Is Raised

  • Raised in our home with daily handling and love

What Makes Our Waitlist Special?

At Pickerel Pups, transparency is everything. We'll keep you updated every step of the way with regular updates about our breeding plans, pregnancy confirmations, and those magical birth announcements! We love sharing photos and videos of our growing puppies too, so you'll feel connected to the process.

Currently, we're expanding our breeding program focus. While we're developing our Standard Poodle program, we continue to offer limited litters of our beloved Goldendoodles, AKC Golden Retrievers, and special Bernedoodle litters. We're even exploring the possibility of AKC Bernese Mountain Dog litters, provided we locate properly health-certified studs that meet our rigorous standards.

How Our Waitlist Works

Our waitlist is so special.  Each family on our list has specific preferences, just like yours. If someone passes on a litter because it wasn't quite right for them, that might move you up the list! Similarly, you have the option to pass on a litter ONCE if the available puppies don't match your preferences (such as coat color). For gender preferences specifically, we understand how important this can be, so we permit three passes if your preferred boy or girl isn't available in consecutive litters.

Families with flexible preferences typically welcome their new family members sooner than those with very specific requests. We completely respect your vision of the perfect puppy – whether that's a chocolate Goldendoodle, a cream Standard Poodle, or a traditional Golden Retriever – and we promise it's worth waiting for the right match!

Throughout your wait, Craig and I are always available to answer questions and share in your excitement as we work together to match you with the puppy that will bring years of joy to your family!

Pickerel Pups is proudly family-run in Minnesota, where our dogs are raised with intention, integrity, and care — one litter at a time.

What size will my puppy grow to be?

All of the dogs at Pickerel Pups are standard size.  We do not shrink down our dogs, and do not have mini dogs. While we can not guarantee the exact size our puppies will be full grown, we can have a good guess at possible full grown size with the help of our Embark packages that estimates adult weight.  Each pup comes with their own Embark panel (a $150.00 value).

What do you mean “raised with puppy culture”?

Puppy culture is a type of puppy training method that starts at a very early age and includes ENS and ESI learning.  It helps puppies with socialization skills and brain development.

At Pickerel Pups, we do what we can to help our litters grow and develop to be the best dog of their ability. We weigh puppies daily, and on days 3-17 of life we start introducing neurological stimulation. ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation) is when we take the puppies through a series of exercises which will help the puppy’s rapid neurological growth and development. According to the American Kennel Club “Five benefits have been observed in canines that were exposed to ENS, including improved cardiovascular performance (heart rate); stronger heart beats; stronger adrenal glands; more tolerance to stress; and greater resistance to disease.”

We also introduce our puppies to a variety of scents (ESI or Early Scent Introduction) starting on day 3 of life which is a training program for puppies that enhances their ability to identify, and react to, specific scents.  Alexandra Horowitz, author of Inside of a Dog,  states “Dogs examine and understand the world through their noses like we see and make sense of the world with our eyes. The area in the brain that processes the data picked up by the nose is 40 times larger in dogs than humans. A dog’s ability to smell is a function of their intellect.”  Puppies who excel in the scent area make excellent candidates for companion, service, and therapy dogs. Naturally some dogs have more of a natural nose instinct compared to others. By doing this training and recording their reactions it helps us match the right pup with the right individual need. There are several different “Puppy Culture” programs out there, but Pickerel Pups prefers Jeanette Forey’s BAB (Bad Ass Breeder) groups.

What food should I feed my puppy?

Once puppies have their teeth, we introduce them to puppy mush that we make with ground dog food and water (starting around 4 weeks of age).   We recommend a high quality dog food with little fillers and natural ingredients.  We think Nutrisource is a great choice for your pup.  We also give our dogs homemade dog treats that could include pumpkin, yogurt, natural peanut butter, fresh fruits and veggies and bone broth.
